Newsletter July 6th 2024

We can't believe that the red fields are starting to show up in the landscape but then again, we can't believe that we are into July. Everyone we speak to seems to feel we are still waiting for a spring/early summer....

It's always great to see what students go on to do, once they have their licences, in this newsletter, two students are discovering either a new experience or new horizons!

Moving to 'The Island'

One of our Members who gained his licence with us in November last year is moving to the Isle of White, so Gill joined him for a trip to the Island as it was his first flight over water... It went very well and they came back with some great images for us.  Anyone else wanting to fly to Sandown airport get in touch...our instructors are happy to fly with you.ical

'Get Into Aeros'

Judy Kelly passed her LAPL skills test with us March last year and hasn't looked back...now she has had a go at aerobatics and loved it!  We asked her to give us a taste of what it was like... Maybe even encourage some others to have a go!

I was one of the lucky sixteen to be selected for the British Aerobatics 'Get Into Aeros' event at Popham Airfield last month. As a rookie LAPL pilot, I had no experience of aerobatics flying but learned so much over the course of the two days at this lovely airfield through mingling and meeting people, listening to inspiring talks and presentations (including former Red Bull champion Nigel Lamb), watching stunning aerobatics demonstrations at all competition levels and of course getting to experience flying some of the basic sequences myself. The highlight was my 45-minute training flight with Julian Murfitt in the Slingsby T67 Firefly – we looped, stall-turned, half-cuban eight-ed, turned steeply and rolled through 360 degrees until the already hazy summer horizon felt meaningless. This really opened my eyes to the incredible potential of aerobatics flying and the capabilities of the Firefly. Returning to flying BODO and BTUW at Enstone will feel very tame in comparison! Having succeeded in not needing to use the in-flight sick bag during the training flight, I returned the following day to fly the club sequence in the competition box in front of a panel of British Aerobatics judges. The competition experience extended to sitting with the judges and scribes and observing the commentary, scoring and set up. The lovely folk at Popham Airfield put on an excellent bbq for us, and it was fantastic to camp out overnight with other pilots under the wings of their visiting planes with the northern lights as our evening backdrop. I'm sure those sleeping in comfy hotel bedrooms missed out! I would definitely recommend this event next year to any Enstone newly qualified PPL or LAPL pilots interested in getting a taste of aerobatics flying. It's fun, you'll learn a lot and meet some great people and it's an absolute bargain at the subsidised cost of only £200 for the weekend. Sick bags even included! See https://www.aerobatics.org.uk/ for more.

                                                                        .Cheers, Judy

                        MILLIE-MOG SPOT:
Sage advice from the caretaker of the Flying-Club:
.     I know you are not used to hot weather so keep
hydrated during any hot spell. Especially if it's
windy on the ground. You may not realise, coming
from a hot aircraft, just how thirsty you are...
especially if you have a fur coat.
